Shopify Refund to Store Credit: How It Works

How to refund to store credit on Shopify, what you need first, the five limits in Shopify's rules, and how to set a returns policy that keeps revenue.

Every refund sent back to a card is revenue that leaves your store for good. A Shopify refund to store credit keeps it: instead of reversing the payment, you add the refunded amount to the customer's store credit balance, which they spend on a future order at checkout. Since July 2025, Shopify lets you do this directly when you process a return or exchange (Shopify changelog).

The feature is simple. The policy around it is where brands get it wrong.

How does a refund to store credit work on Shopify?

When you process a return, you pick store credit as the refund method in the "Refund now" section. You can also split the refund between the original payment method and store credit, and choose whether the credit expires. The credit lands on the customer's profile and appears at checkout.

Shopify's store credit documentation lists four cases where store credit is available as a refund method: an entire order, a partial order, a returned item and a canceled order. Apps can do the same through the Admin API, which Shopify opened in May 2025 (Shopify developer changelog).

What do you need before you refund to store credit?

Three things: new customer accounts turned on, the right staff permission, and customers who sign in to spend their credit. Store credit doesn't work with legacy customer accounts, and only the store owner or staff with the "Refund to store credit" permission can issue it.

The sign-in point matters more than it looks. A customer can apply store credit only when signed in through customer accounts or when paying with Shop Pay. If shoppers check out as guests, their credit sits unused until they log in.

What are the limits of Shopify store credit?

Shopify's documentation sets five limits worth knowing before you change your returns policy:

  1. The customer applies their full store credit balance to an order, not part of it.

  2. A single customer account can hold less than $15,000 USD of store credit.

  3. Store credit pays for the first purchase of a subscription, not for recurring subscription bills.

  4. Expiry is set each time you issue credit. There is no store-wide default.

  5. For stores created on or after May 12, 2025, orders paid with store credit carry third-party transaction fees on the store credit amount.

Point 5 is the one finance teams miss. If your store was created after that date, budget for the fee when customers spend refunded credit.

Should you refund to store credit by default?

Offer it as a choice, not as the only option. A customer who chooses store credit is telling you they plan to buy again. A customer forced into it may never come back, and refund rules vary by state and country, so check yours before changing your policy.

Two settings make the choice work. Put store credit first in the returns flow, with the amount shown clearly. And decide on expiry with care: Shopify itself asks merchants to check local laws before setting expiration dates. We cover the rules by state in does store credit expire.

If customers who never asked for credit end up with balances they don't use, the refund saved nothing. Track how much refunded credit gets spent within 90 days.

Is refunded credit the same as membership credit?

No. Refunded credit is money a customer was owed back. Membership credit is money a customer chose to pay you in advance, on a schedule, because the credit and perks are worth more to them than the fee. The first saves part of a lost sale. The second creates revenue every month.

The usage numbers show the difference in intent. Riversol members have redeemed 58% of the store credit issued to them (Riversol case study), and Pair Eyewear members 55% of their usable credit (Pair Eyewear case study). Customers spend credit they planned for. We compare the two currencies in store credit vs points.

Frequently asked questions

Can I refund part of an order to store credit and the rest to the card?

Yes. Shopify lets you refund to a combination of the original payment method and store credit when processing a return.

Can I change a store credit refund back to a card refund?

Yes, by over-refunding the order to the original payment method. This doesn't reverse the store credit already issued, and it requires a specific staff permission.

Do customers get notified when they receive store credit?

Only if you select "Notify customer" when issuing the credit. The email template can be customized in your Shopify notification settings.
