How to Migrate Yotpo Points to Shopify Store Credit

A step-by-step plan to convert points balances into native Shopify store credit, with the five Shopify rules to check before you issue a dollar.
More than a quarter of loyalty points (26.2%) go unspent, and 11.9% expire before anyone uses them, according to the Antavo Global Customer Loyalty Report 2026. That's usually the moment a brand asks how to migrate Yotpo points to Shopify store credit. The migration means converting each customer's points balance into a dollar balance that sits on their Shopify customer profile and applies at checkout like a payment method.
It is a data project before it is a marketing one. Get the numbers wrong and you will hear about it from your customers first.
Can you convert Yotpo points into Shopify store credit?
Yes. You export each customer's points balance, convert it into a dollar amount at your program's redemption value, and issue that amount as Shopify store credit, either from the admin or through the storeCreditAccountCredit API. The credit then appears on the customer's profile and at checkout.
The API route is the realistic one past a few hundred customers. Shopify's storeCreditAccountCredit mutation accepts a customer ID, creates a store credit account in the right currency if none exists, and can attach an expiration date to each credit.
What do you need to check in Shopify before you migrate?
Five Shopify rules decide whether the migration works for your customers: new customer accounts, the full-balance rule, the per-account limit, subscriptions, and transaction fees. Check each one against your store before you issue a single dollar.
All five come from Shopify's store credit documentation:
Store credit isn't available on legacy customer accounts. Customers spend it when signed in through new customer accounts or with Shop Pay.
Customers can only apply their full store credit balance to an order, not part of it.
A single customer account can hold less than $15,000 USD of store credit.
Store credit pays for the first purchase of a subscription, but not for recurring subscription bills.
For stores created on or after May 12, 2025, orders paid with store credit carry third-party transaction fees on the store credit amount.
Two more details trip brands up. Expiry is set per issuance, with no store-wide default, so your script has to set it every time. And a customer with credit in several currencies only sees the balance matching the checkout currency.
How do you convert points into a dollar value?
Use the redemption value your program already promises customers. If your points currently redeem at a stated rate, convert at that rate, round in the customer's favor, and keep the conversion table with your export so finance can reconcile the total.
An example with made-up numbers: if 100 points redeem for $1 in your program, a customer holding 2,350 points receives $23.50. Converting at a lower rate than customers were told feels like a devaluation, and support tickets will say so.
Decide two edge cases up front. What happens to balances below your old minimum redemption, and what happens to points earned on orders that are still inside the return window. Write both decisions down before the export.
How do you migrate Yotpo points to Shopify store credit, step by step?
Pick a low-traffic window, pause points earning and redemption, and tell customers before you start.
Export customer-level balances, with email and Shopify customer ID, and save the file as your source of truth.
Convert every balance, then check that the total dollar value matches what finance expects.
Test the issuance script on a development store, then issue credit through the API with your expiry decision applied.
Turn on store credit at checkout, reconcile against Shopify's outstanding store credit balance report, and email customers their new balance.
Keep the points widget off until step 5 is done. Two live balances during the switch is how double-spending happens.

Should you keep a points program after the migration?
Maybe. Points still work for small behaviors: reviews, referrals, a birthday. Store credit works for value the customer can spend without doing math. You can run both, with points for engagement and credit for the money. We compare the two currencies in store credit vs points, and the Yotpo-specific setup in Yotpo vs Subscribfy.
A customer who pays to belong and accumulates points toward a reward is the hardest customer to lose. Riversol members have redeemed 58% of the store credit issued to them (Riversol case study).
Frequently asked questions
Do customers need an account to use Shopify store credit?
Yes. They apply store credit at checkout when signed in through new customer accounts or when using Shop Pay. Legacy customer accounts are not supported.

Only if you set an expiry when you issue it. Expiry is chosen per issuance, and Shopify asks you to check local laws first. We cover the rules state by state in does store credit expire.
Can migrated store credit pay for subscription renewals?
No. Shopify lets store credit pay for the first purchase of a subscription, not the recurring bills.
