Chargebacks After Black Friday: How to Prepare for Q1

Black Friday orders turn into disputes weeks later, when the sales rush is over and the team is smaller. What drives the post-holiday wave and what to set up before November 27.
Shopify merchants sold $14.6 billion over Black Friday-Cyber Monday 2025, up 27% on 2024, according to Shopify’s BFCM 2025 data. Some of those orders came back weeks later as disputes. Chargebacks after Black Friday don’t arrive during the sale: they arrive once customers read their statements, often after the holidays.
Black Friday 2026 is on November 27. Here is why the post-holiday dispute wave happens and what to put in place before it.
Why do chargebacks spike after Black Friday?
Disputes lag sales. A customer disputes a charge when they see it on a statement, when a gift doesn’t arrive, or when a return isn’t refunded fast enough, and that usually happens weeks after the order.
Chargebacks911 told eCommerceNews that the first quarter has become a peak period for disputes, as consumers review statements and reconcile budgets after holiday spending, and that elevated returns in late December and early January feed the wave (eCommerceNews).
The timing works against you twice. Shopify gives merchants a limited window, usually 7 to 21 days, to respond to a chargeback (Shopify’s chargeback process), and those windows open in January, when seasonal support staff are gone.
Which chargebacks after Black Friday hit hardest?
Shopify sorts disputes into seven types. After a big sale, four deserve the most attention: product not received, fraudulent or unrecognized charges, credit not processed after a return, and subscription canceled for customers who joined a program during the sale and forgot.
The last one matters for subscription and membership brands. A monthly member who joins on Black Friday renews in late December, then again in January, right when card statements get the closest look. Shopify Protect won’t help there: it covers only the first order of a subscription, not the renewals, as we explain in what Shopify Protect covers.
What to set up before November 27
Check your billing descriptor. The name on the statement should be the brand the customer bought from.
Send renewal reminders to every Black Friday joiner. A reminder before the first renewal turns a forgotten charge into a cancellation instead of a dispute.
Publish holiday shipping cutoffs and a clear return window. Shopify lists your shipping and return policies among the evidence it adds to “product not received” and “credit not processed” responses.
Turn on issuer alerts. Visa and Mastercard alerts flag a dispute before it becomes a chargeback, so you can refund and keep the case off your record.
Watch your rate weekly from December. Shopify can enroll stores with a 90-day chargeback rate of 1.5% or more in its Network Dispute Resolution Program, which refunds every new dispute automatically.
Why holiday chargebacks cost more than the order
Each chargeback on Shopify Payments takes the order amount plus a $15 fee in the US, and winning doesn’t take it out of your chargeback rate, which is based on disputes filed. A holiday spike can push a store past the thresholds card networks watch, covered in our guide to Visa VAMP.
Subscribfy’s chargeback prevention matches Visa and Mastercard alerts to the right Shopify order and applies your refund rules automatically, so a January dispute can be refunded before it becomes a chargeback. It intercepts 95% of disputes early, and its dashboard shows live month-to-date Visa and Mastercard rates.
