Shopify Chargeback Guarantee: What Shopify Protect Covers

Shopify Chargeback Guarantee: What Shopify Protect Covers

Shopify Protect is the closest thing to a built-in chargeback guarantee on Shopify. Here is exactly which orders it covers, which it doesn't, and why subscription brands need more.

Shopify does offer a chargeback guarantee. It is called Shopify Protect, it costs nothing, and on the right order it pays back the full order amount plus the $15 chargeback fee. On the wrong order it pays nothing, and for subscription and membership brands every renewal is the wrong order.

This guide explains what the Shopify chargeback guarantee covers, the eligibility rules that decide it order by order, and what to put in place for everything it leaves out. Every rule below comes from Shopify’s Help Center, checked in October 2026.

Does Shopify have a chargeback guarantee?

Yes, for fraud on eligible orders. Shopify Protect reimburses the chargeback amount and the chargeback fee when a protected order receives a fraudulent chargeback, and Shopify handles the dispute for you. It is free for US merchants using Shopify Payments and Shop Pay.

Shopify’s Shopify Protect page says coverage applies to eligible Shop Pay transactions authorized through Shopify Payments, at no extra cost. For orders it doesn’t cover, the normal process applies: the bank takes the disputed amount and a $15 fee in the US as soon as the chargeback opens, according to Shopify’s chargeback process page.

Which orders does Shopify Protect cover?

An order is protected only if it was paid with Shop Pay through a US Shopify Payments account, contains only shipped physical items, and was fulfilled with valid tracking from a supported carrier within 7 days. Shopify shows a Shopify Protect status on each order.

Shopify’s Shopify Protect eligibility page lists the conditions:

  1. Shop Pay only. Shop Pay as an accelerated checkout on Facebook, Instagram or Google counts. Shop Pay Installments doesn’t.

  2. US merchant, US Shopify Payments account.

  3. Physical items only. One digital product or one pickup-in-store item in the order removes protection from the whole order.

  4. Fulfilled fast. Valid tracking within 7 days of the order, in transit within 10 days, with a supported carrier such as USPS, UPS, FedEx or DHL Express.

  5. No address change. Editing the shipping address after checkout voids coverage.

What does the Shopify chargeback guarantee not cover?

Shopify Protect does not cover recurring subscription orders, chargebacks that aren’t fraud-based, orders paid outside Shop Pay, or stores outside the US. For a subscription or membership brand, that means most of the revenue at risk sits outside the guarantee.

The subscription rule is the one to read twice. Shopify states that Protect analyzes the initial subscription order, but subsequent recurring orders don’t receive coverage. Only the first order in a subscription is eligible.

So the month-four renewal from a customer who forgot they subscribed, and the “I didn’t authorize this” dispute on a membership charge, both fall outside the guarantee. We walk through what a lost dispute costs in what happens if you lose a chargeback on Shopify.

There is also the ratio. Protect pays back the money; it doesn’t stop the bank from filing the dispute against your account. Card networks watch dispute levels separately, as our guide to Visa VAMP explains.

How do you cover what Shopify Protect leaves out?

Stop disputes before they become chargebacks. Card issuer alert programs from Visa and Mastercard flag a disputed charge early, so you can refund or resolve it before a chargeback is filed, the fee is charged and your dispute count goes up.

That is the approach behind Ethoca alerts and Visa’s dispute programs, and it works on any order, including renewals that Protect ignores. A practical setup keeps both layers:

It intercepts 95% of disputes early, with 90% order matching accuracy, and shows live month-to-date Visa and Mastercard rates in a Shopify dashboard.
