Ethoca Alerts: How They Work for Shopify Merchants

How Ethoca alerts stop a dispute before it becomes a chargeback, how they compare with Verifi CDRN and RDR, and what they do not fix.

Ethoca alerts are pre-dispute notifications: when a cardholder disputes a charge with their bank, the bank sends the case to Ethoca, and Ethoca warns the merchant before a chargeback is filed. If you refund in time, the dispute ends there.

For a Shopify brand, that difference is concrete. A chargeback on Shopify Payments pulls the order amount and a fee out of your payout and can take months to resolve. An alert you act on costs you the refund and the alert fee, without the chargeback fee or the wait.

What are Ethoca alerts?

Ethoca alerts are a dispute prevention service run by Ethoca, a Mastercard company. They notify a merchant in near real time when a customer disputes a transaction with their bank, so the merchant can refund the order and stop the chargeback before it is filed.

According to Mastercard's Ethoca Alerts page, the network prevented more than 39 million chargebacks in 2025 and more than 110 million since 2011, based on Mastercard's internal data. Mastercard also describes Ethoca as a brand-agnostic company.

You only receive an alert if the customer's issuing bank takes part in the network. That is the main limit of any alert program: disputes from banks outside it are not caught by that network.

How do Ethoca alerts work on a Shopify store?

An Ethoca alert sits between the customer's bank and your Shopify admin. The bank reports the dispute to Ethoca, Ethoca passes it to you, and you decide whether to refund the Shopify order before the case turns into a chargeback.

  1. A customer contacts their bank about a charge from your store, for fraud or because they do not recognize it or are unhappy with the order.

  2. If the bank takes part in Ethoca, it sends the dispute details to the network instead of filing a chargeback right away.

  3. Ethoca forwards the alert to you, usually through a provider that is connected to your store.

  4. You find the matching Shopify order and refund it, or you let the case go ahead as a normal chargeback.

Step 3 is where most of the work sits. The alerts come from the card networks, not from Shopify, so something has to match each alert to the right order quickly. An alert you see too late is just a chargeback with extra steps.

Ethoca alerts vs Verifi CDRN and RDR

Ethoca is Mastercard's alert network. Verifi, Visa's company, runs two equivalents: CDRN, where you decide on each case within 72 hours, and RDR, which refunds Visa disputes automatically based on rules you set.

The CDRN and RDR details come from Verifi's dispute resolution page. Verifi adds that disputes resolved through CDRN or RDR cannot come back later as chargebacks.

The practical difference is who decides. CDRN and Ethoca wait for a person or a rule on your side. RDR decides on its own, which saves time but means you refund some orders you might have won.

Do Ethoca alerts lower your chargeback rate on Shopify?

Mostly, but not completely. A dispute resolved through an alert never becomes a chargeback, so it avoids the fee and the debit. But Shopify still counts disputes resolved through programs like Visa RDR in the rate it uses to monitor your account.

Verifi states that disputes resolved before a chargeback do not count against Visa's dispute ratio. Shopify is stricter: its chargeback process page explains that the rate driving Shopify Payments account monitoring (warning banners, reserves, Shop app eligibility) includes disputes resolved through network programs such as RDR.

Visa can also record an early fraud warning on an order you refunded, according to Shopify's monitoring programs page. So alerts reduce the damage of a dispute. They do not make the customer's complaint disappear.

When should you refund an Ethoca alert?

Refund when fighting would cost more than the order is worth, or when you have no strong evidence. Let it go to a chargeback only when you can prove delivery and the customer's intent, and the order value justifies the time.

A useful rule of thumb is to look at the reason first. A customer who does not recognize the charge or forgot a renewal is rarely worth fighting: the refund ends the case, and you can still win the customer back. A clear fraud claim on a delivered, signed-for order is a different case.

For subscription and membership brands, recurring charges are a common trigger. Our guide on reducing subscription chargebacks explains why recurring charges get disputed and how clearer billing communication reduces it.

How to get Ethoca alerts on Shopify

The simplest way for a Shopify merchant to get Ethoca alerts is through a chargeback prevention provider rather than a direct contract with Ethoca. The provider connects to the networks, matches each alert to a Shopify order and applies the refund rules you choose.

Subscribfy Chargeback Prevention detects Visa and Mastercard dispute signals early, ties every alert to a real Shopify order and refunds according to the rules you set. For cases that still escalate, it builds the evidence packet for you. The product page reports a 95% chargeback interception rate through issuer alerts and 90% accuracy in matching disputes to the right Shopify order.

What it looks like in practice: Hoodies For Heroes moved chargeback prevention into Subscribfy in January 2026. Six months later, its chargeback rate was down 64% and it had saved over $4,300 compared with its previous provider (case study).

Frequently asked questions

Is Ethoca owned by Mastercard?

Yes. Ethoca operates as "Ethoca by Mastercard" and its alerts are presented on Mastercard's own site as part of its dispute management services.

What is the difference between Ethoca and Verifi?

Ethoca belongs to Mastercard and Verifi belongs to Visa. Both send pre-dispute alerts. Verifi also offers RDR, which refunds Visa disputes automatically based on your rules.

What happens if I ignore an Ethoca alert?

Nothing stops the dispute. The case continues and becomes a normal chargeback, with the fee and the debit from your payout.

Do Ethoca alerts work with Shopify Payments?

Yes. The alerts come from the card networks rather than from Shopify, so you receive them through a provider connected to the networks, then refund the matching Shopify order.
