International Members Are Paying for Perks They Cannot Use

A membership program built around domestic free shipping and local fulfillment perks delivers most of its stated value to customers in one country and charges everyone else the same fee for a program that does not work for them.
Cross-border ecommerce is growing faster than domestic ecommerce in almost every category. Research from DHL and Shopify found that 59% of online shoppers made at least one cross-border purchase in 2025, and that international orders tend to carry 17 to 20% higher average order values than domestic ones. These are not marginal customers. International buyers are often higher-value shoppers who are specifically seeking out brands that do not exist in their home market.
Most membership programs offer the same perk set to international members as to domestic ones. Free domestic shipping is listed on the landing page. An international buyer joins, pays the same fee, and discovers at checkout that the free shipping perk does not apply to their country, or applies at a significantly reduced level, or requires a minimum order that reflects domestic fulfillment economics rather than international ones.
The perk that drove the signup decision does not deliver for them. The fee does.
The Problem Is Structural, Not Incidental
International members joining a domestically designed program are not encountering an edge case. They are experiencing the core program as designed, which simply was not designed with their situation in mind. Free domestic shipping is a standard membership perk for a specific operational reason: domestic fulfillment is predictable enough to price into a membership fee. International shipping is not, and most brands have never built international perk alternatives because it requires a separate operational and pricing decision.
The result is that international members are underserved by design, and the gap between what the membership promised on the landing page and what it actually delivers is widest for exactly the customer segment growing fastest in ecommerce.
Store Credit Travels Better Than Shipping Perks
The simplest fix for international members is an honest assessment of which perks in the program actually deliver value regardless of where the member is located, and which ones are domestic-only benefits masquerading as universal ones.
Store credit denominated in the member's currency and applied automatically at checkout works for any member, anywhere. Early access to new products works regardless of location. Exclusive pricing works regardless of fulfillment geography. These perks are genuinely universal, and a membership designed for international members would lead with them rather than leading with a free shipping benefit that does not apply.
Research on cross-border ecommerce experience from eShipper found that 95% of buyers believe customer experience influences brand loyalty, and that 46% of consumers find digital experiences indistinguishable from each other, resulting in weak repeat purchase rates. A membership program that differentiates through genuinely valuable benefits for international members is building exactly the kind of distinct experience that drives loyalty in markets where most competitors offer nothing specific.
The International Perk Problem Is Also a Legal One
Most membership landing pages do not clearly disclose which perks apply internationally and which do not. An international customer who joins based on a free shipping promise that turns out to be domestic-only has grounds to dispute the value they were sold. In jurisdictions with strong consumer protection frameworks, this kind of gap between marketed benefits and delivered benefits is increasingly scrutinized.
The fix is twofold: disclose clearly on the landing page which benefits are geography-dependent, and build at least one alternative perk that delivers genuine value to international members at the same fee level.
Subscribfy's own merchant data shows member LTV running 115% higher than non-members at the twelve-month mark. That gap depends on members receiving the value the membership promised, not discovering that the core perks do not apply to them after they have already paid for the first cycle.
If your membership landing page lists free shipping as a headline benefit without disclosing that it is domestic-only, your international members are joining a program that cannot deliver what sold them.
