Best Loyalty Apps for Subscription Brands Using Recharge

Best Loyalty Apps for Subscription Brands Using Recharge

How Smile.io, LoyaltyLion, Joy, Influence.io and Rivo handle Recharge subscriptions, where points get lost on recurring orders, and when one app beats two.

A subscriber trades points for a $50 reward and applies it to a $25 subscription renewal. The other $25 disappears. That is not a bug: Smile.io’s help center states that Recharge coupons apply only to a customer’s next order and that any unused balance is forfeited.

That detail is why choosing the best loyalty apps for subscription brands using Recharge comes down to more than a logo on an integrations page. Earning points on subscription orders is easy. Spending them on the next renewal is where loyalty apps differ.

Do loyalty apps work with Recharge subscriptions?

Yes for earning, not always for spending. Recharge renewals are Shopify orders, so loyalty apps can award points on them without any integration. Redeeming points on an upcoming subscription order is different: it needs a dedicated Recharge integration, because regular loyalty discounts don’t apply to Recharge’s recurring charges.

LoyaltyLion’s help center says it plainly: subscription orders are still orders, so customers earn points on them even without the Recharge integration. Influence.io’s documentation explains the other half: its regular redeem rules don’t work on Recharge subscriptions because of how Recharge processes discounts, so it offers Recharge-specific rewards instead.

How do the main loyalty apps handle Recharge?

Smile.io, LoyaltyLion, Joy, Influence.io and Rivo all offer a Recharge integration. They differ on which plans include it, whether rewards land in the Recharge customer portal, and what happens to a reward worth more than the next renewal.

Everything below comes from each vendor’s own help center or blog, checked in October 2026:

What should subscription brands check before choosing?

  1. Where does the subscriber redeem? If the reward only works at checkout, a subscriber who never comes back to checkout never spends it. Look for redemption inside the Recharge customer portal or automatic application to the next charge.

  2. What happens to a leftover balance? With fixed-amount Recharge coupons, a reward larger than the next order can lose its remainder. Set reward values below your lowest subscription price, or prefer percentage rewards.

  3. Is the integration on the plan you can afford? Several vendors gate Recharge behind higher tiers. Price the plan that includes it, not the entry plan.

  4. Can you reward commitment, not just orders? A subscriber-only tier or a bonus on the first subscription rewards the behavior you want, not only the spend.

When does one app beat Recharge plus a loyalty app?

One app wins when the sync itself is the problem: discounts that must be pushed to another system, two customer portals, two sets of data and two bills. If subscriptions, loyalty and membership share one platform, there is nothing to sync.

That is how Subscribfy is built. Product subscriptions, loyalty and paid membership run in the same Shopify app, on Shopify’s native checkout. Product subscriptions cost $49 a month plus 0.49% + 19¢ per subscription order on the Standard plan, with migration assistance included. We compare the two platforms in detail in Recharge vs Subscribfy.

Some brands go further and replace part of auto-ship with a membership. Nailboo built its Boo Club around discovery rather than repeat shipments: members get monthly store credit instead of the same product on repeat. 62% of shoppers joined, members bring 60% of total revenue, and LTV rose 101% after 11 months (Nailboo case study).

Frequently asked questions

Do subscribers earn loyalty points on Recharge renewals?

In most apps, yes. Renewals are Shopify orders, so they trigger points like any other order. Check whether your app awards points on the order total or excludes discounts.

Can loyalty points be used on a Recharge subscription?

Only through a dedicated integration. The app creates a Recharge discount that applies to the next subscription order, or syncs a code the subscriber can apply in the Recharge portal.

Do I need Recharge to run subscriptions and loyalty on Shopify?

No. Shopify has its own Subscriptions app, and platforms like Subscribfy run subscriptions and loyalty together. Our Shopify Subscriptions vs Recharge guide covers the trade-offs.
